20 Hours For 20Talk | Claremont Showgrounds

Theresa is taking on the 20-hour challenge to support youth mental health and raise awareness about the importance of prevention.

Asking for Help from the big boys:)

Sent out few emails this week, messaged friends and families, few promises of next week from lovelies:) Few emails I am holding my breath on with replies which is similar to all the hope you put in 1 basket in life then if and when it goes to plan or it doesn't it is either the What Now or Continuing onwards. There isn't a right or wrong way to do, t is YOUR way that feels right or wrong to YOU. x I went along to a Meet n Greet day last week in Freo, met other lovelies and connected to a few, met my team players and heard their stories. It's quite an undertaking, one that kicks off in11 days.....stay tuned loons!

Setting out from the starting line....

Setting my gear up, nabbed a Bunnings sleeping bag, unsure which drink bottles I will use yet. I haven't found my favourite camping chair yet either, got to battle the shed for that quest....I have a few journals but would appreciate a 20/20 as well. Updated my write up on here and I have made requests for donations and will do so further through the week on my work page and emailing a few businesses. Plus I am about to go and buy me a greeny plant as my brother did to add some greenery to the house, he needed a little plant in his life and I was proud that he followed through. All in all, I am on my way. Yay!

Welcome to My Jungle....

In just 13 days, I’ll embark on a challenge that supports people with Mental Health—one that will see me sitting alone in a small, 2x2-meter square in a vast warehouse, surrounded by 249 other brave souls, each of us sitting in silence for 20 long hours. In that stillness, with only a camping chair, a swag, and a journal, I’ll have nothing but my thoughts and emotions for company. It’s an event that I am supporting those who battle Mental Health struggles daily, those who might feel like they’re invisible, abandoned, or that no one cares. With no distractions—no technology, no books to escape into, I’ll experience a fraction of what many go through every day: isolation, fear, longing, and the desperate need for understanding. This idea was born from the hearts of two incredible men who saw the urgent need for greater support and awareness of mental health issues. Their own stories—of family and friends who faced emotional battles—led to the creation of this event: 20 Hours For 20Talk. And now, I am proud to be part of it, pushing myself to feel, think, and empathise in a way I haven’t before.

But there’s a bigger purpose here. I’m reaching out to ask for your help to donate to this much needed cause. Your generous donation, no matter the size, will go toward my goal of raising $1004 to support this cause. I've already contributed, and in the process, I received a donation from a stranger, one not unlike the strangers that I will be sitting alongside during this event. It was a beautiful, humbling surprise for someone to give support, yet they don't know me. Family and friends have also supported me, and I’m grateful for their kindness on behalf of 20 Hours For 20Talk. Every donation counts, and together, we can help make a real difference in support that 20/20 did not have yesterday. Your donation helps provide vital services: Every $120 puts a young person through a one-day Mental Health Maintenance course. It helps expand 20Talk's online resources, reaching over 60,000 people and running large-scale, interactive events. With every dollar, we’re breaking down the harmful stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging young people to seek support before things reach a crisis point.
The challenge itself is simple in its premise but immense in its emotional depth. For 20 hours, I’ll be confined to my small square—only allowed to leave for basic necessities, with 3 small meals brought to us throughout the day. Feel free to tell me of any mental or written tasks I can do during the 20 hours as the mental preparation is one of the real challenges. Will I sit in my silent square comfortably or be overwhelmed with emotion? Will my thoughts race or come to a complete stop as I zombie out?                                            Or will I find peace in the stillness, a rare luxury in our noisy, chaotic world?
Suicide remains the leading cause of death for young people aged 15-44 yet only 2% of mental health funding goes toward prevention. 20 Hours For 20Talk is more than an event. It’s a lifeline, a way to help prevent people from spiraling into a crisis by offering education, support, and a compassionate, non-judgmental space. I’m taking on this challenge for my three children who have faced their own various battles over the years. I’m doing it for my friends and family who’ve struggled in silence, too proud or too fearful to ask for help. And I’m doing it for people I will most probably never meet, those that have ever felt alone in their mental health journey.
In these 20 hours, I will reflect on my own life, my decisions, and the people I love. I’ll think about the roads that I have walked, some I have run from, others that I am yet to discover, the roads that still lay ahead for me and my children. I’ll think about how, through these moments of personal discomfort, we can spark change—one small act of compassion at a time. Your contribution will make that change possible. It will help create a ripple effect of care, kindness, and understanding that can transform someone’s life.If you ever need someone to talk to, my ears are open. There's a reason we have 2 ears and 1 mouth, listen more and talk less. I’m told I’m a great listener—and though I love to talk, I know how to listen, too. So here I am, asking for your support—whether big or small. Your kindness means that anyone struggling with Mental Health may be supported, and to the many who will benefit from the work 20 Hours For 20Talk is doing. Thank you for reading and I look forward to seeing your name alongside the list of people who have already generously donated.
